Little Venice London An Ultimate Guide
Little Venice: Everything You Need To Know
Little Venice is one of the best places to find tranquillity, waterfront cafés and pubs, and beautiful homes in central London. The prime location, with easy travel to the West End, combined with its calming atmosphere make it a very sought after and attractive residential area.
In terms of its history, it has been widely known that the area was bombed in World War I when enemy planes mistook the canals for the river Thames. This 'Venice' of London began to garner more influence after World War II, and in 1950 became known as 'Little Venice, with some debate over how its name came to be. Some believe that the poet Robert Browning dictated the new name, whilst others believe it was Lord Byron.
Little Venice is described by visitors or locals as a hidden gem of London’. Dating back to the early 1800s, the area has seen changes and modernisation whilst preserving most of its original features and a picturesque identity.
Who’s there
Kate Moss, Kelly Osbourne, and Earl Spencer are all reportedly residents of the local area. Throughout the decades, there have been a number of notable residents including the writer Katherine Mansfield, the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and the codebreaker Alan Turing.
Entertainment
The combination of access to the canal and great shops and restaurants means that there is a variety of activities in Little Venice both on land and water. For those who enjoy being on the water, there is a great boat trip to Camden Lock. And for those who prefer land, a leisurely stroll along the canal, or a visit to The Clifton nursery, the oldest garden centre in London, are both enjoyable options. At the Canal Café Theatre, you can take in a variety of performances.
On the eastern banks of Regent’s Canal at Little Venice is Rembrandt Gardens, also known as Warwick Avenue Gardens. These pretty gardens feature plenty of fauna and in spring countless hyacinths and tulips bloom, originally planted in the 1970s on the 700th anniversary of the founding of Amsterdam, the ‘Venice of the North’.
We recommend NewsRevue, the world’s longest running live comedy show. There are also some great restaurants, bars, and cafés in the area, including Warwick Castle, a traditional pub that is a popular destination for residents and celebrities. Little Venice also hosts the Canalway Cavalcade Waterways Festival every year. This vibrant event features hundreds of boats congregated in the water, bands, kids activities, an ale bar, delicious food and much more!
It remains one of London's prime residential areas and contains restaurants, shops, theatres and pubs. Canalside venues include the Puppet Theatre Barge, the Waterside Café, the Summerhouse Restaurant, and Cafe La Ville.
Smartest Streets
The junction forms a triangular shape basin. Many of the buildings in the vicinity are Regency white painted stucco terraced townhouses and taller blocks (mansions) in the same style. Blomfield Road and Maida Avenue are where the majority of the luxurious white 17th-century stucco mansions are located. Also of note is Warwick Avenue, which is home to some very grand properties, and is conveniently close to the tube station.
Education
The Little Sweethearts Montessori School is a popular nursery choice in the area. For primaries, two popular choices are St. Saviour’s Church of England Primary School and St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School, which are both coeducational state schools that cater to children aged 3 to11 years, and both had very impressive 2010 performance reports. The King Solomon academy nearby schools children aged three to 18 and have been given excellent reviews.
Travel
With its central location, travel to and from Little Venice is convenient. There is the Warwick Avenue Underground station, and nearby Maida Vale station, both on the Bakerloo line, and good bus service in the area. There is also the exciting option of the Waterbus service that operates from Little Venice to Regent’s Park and London Zoo.
The regular waterbus service operates from Little Venice eastward around Regent's Park, calling at London Zoo and continuing towards Camden Town. Little Venice is served by one tube station, Warwick Avenue on the Bakerloo line, and by the Nos. 6, 46, 187 and 414 bus services.Trivia
Although Little Venice currently refers to the entire area south of the Maida Vale, Robert Browning originally used the term Little Venice to describe the point where the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal meets the Regents Canal.
